CAMPAÑA MUNDIAL CONTRA LA GUERRA

PARA DECIR NO por EDUARDO GALEANO

El presidente del planeta anuncia su próximo crimen en nombre de Dios y de la democracia. Así calumnia a Dios. Y calumnia, también, a la democracia, que a duras penas ha sobrevivido en el mundo a pesar de las dictaduras que los Estados Unidos vienen sembrando en todas partes desde hace más de un siglo.

El gobierno de Bush, que más que gobierno parece un oleoducto, necesita apoderarse de la segunda reserva mundial de petróleo, que yace bajo el suelo de Irak. Además, necesita justificar el dineral de sus gastos militares y necesita exhibir en el campo de batalla los últimos modelos de su industria armamentista.

De eso se trata. Lo demás, son pretextos. Y los pretextos para esta próxima carnicería ofenden la inteligencia. El único país que ha usado armas nucleares contra la población civil, el país que descargó las bombas atómicas que aniquilaron Hiroshima y Nagasaki, pretende convencernos de que Irak es un peligro para la humanidad. Si el presidente Bush ama tanto a la humanidad, y de veras quiere conjurar la más grave amenaza que la humanidad padece, ¿por qué no se bombardea a sí mismo, en vez de planificar un nuevo exterminio de pueblos inocentes?

Inmensas manifestaciones invadirán las calles del mundo este 15 de febrero. La humanidad está harta de que sus asesinos la usen de coartada. Y está harta de llorar a sus muertos al fin de cada guerra: esta vez quiere impedir la guerra que los va a matar.

WORLD CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE WAR

TO SAY NO by EDUARDO GALEANO

The president of the planet has announced his next crime in the name of God and democracy. This is his way of slandering God. He also slanders democracy, which has somehow managed to survive in the world, despite the dictatorships that the United States has sown worldwide for more than a century.

Bush's government, that seems to be an oil pipeline more than a government, needs to expropriate the world's second largest reserve of oil, that lies under Iraqi soil. It also needs to justify enormous amounts of military expense and to show off its arms industry's latest models on the battlefield.

That's what it's all about. The rest are only excuses. And the pretences for this carnage to come insult the intelligence. The only country that has used nuclear arms against a civilian population, the country that let loose the atomic bombs that annihilated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, intends to convince us that Iraq is a danger for humanity. If president Bush loves humanity so much, and if he really wants to avert the most serious threat that humanity is facing, why doesn´t he bomb himself, instead of planning the extermination of another innocent people?

Huge demonstrations will take to the streets all over the world this coming February 15th. Humanity is sick and tired of being used as an alibi by its assassins. It is also sick and tired of crying for its dead at the end of every war: this time it wants to prevent the war that will kill them.
